Directions on Making Aromatherapy Candles

If you are looking for directions on making aromatherapy candles, read on. It is quite simple to make your very own fragranced candles at home with the right supplies. The first thing you will need is the wax, of course. You can go for traditional paraffin candle wax or even high quality beeswax. Soy based wax is quite popular these days, too. You'll also need a pack of wicks, a candle mold, a double boiler, a cooking thermometer, essential oil, and dye suitable for candle making if you want color. You can also use crayon shavings to color your candles.

The first step is to prepare your mold. Some candlemakers find that applying a light coating of rubbing alcohol to the mold before pouring the wax in makes it easier to pop the candle out of the mold after it has hardened. Then, you will want to add the wick to the mold and secure it with a small amount of modeling putty. After your molds are ready, melt the wax in the double boiler. You'll want to use your thermometer to make sure the temperature does not go higher than 180 degrees. Use a medium low temperature and melt the wax slowly.

Once the wax has been melted down to liquid, it's time to add the fragrance oil you've chosen. You can go for an essential oil or a synthetic oil used for the purpose of fragrancing candles. Add the fragrance one drop at a time until the scent has reached the desired intensity. After your scent has been added, you can add the color if you want color. If you use crayon shavings to color your candle, make sure they melt completely and are well blended. Once the scent and color is well blended, you can pour the wax into the mold.

Pour the wax slowly into the mold, then allow your candles to sit for at least a day. The amount of time it will take for your candles to set will depend on their size. Small candles will of course take less time to harden than large candles. If you want to experiment a bit more with candlemaking, you can find plenty of books that contain directions on making aromatherapy candles. Fragrant Candles: A Practical Guide to Making Candles for the Home & Garden by Rhondda Cleary is one example of a great book about the process of making scented candles.
